How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage
The basic process is straightforward: calculate volume, multiply by density, convert pounds to US short tons, and add a reasonable overage if the project calls for it.

1. Measure the area
For a rectangle, multiply length by width. If the driveway or paved area is irregular, divide it into smaller rectangles and add the results.
2. Convert depth to feet
Depth must use the same unit system as the volume calculation. For example, 2.5 inches is 2.5 ÷ 12 feet.
3. Calculate volume
Volume in cubic feet can be divided by 27 to get cubic yards.
4. Use density to find weight
US tons = pounds ÷ 2,000
Asphalt density varies by mix, aggregate, compaction, and supplier. Use a project-specific value when possible.
5. Add waste carefully
An allowance can account for measurement differences, irregular edges, handling, and small losses. The appropriate percentage depends on the project and should remain visible as a separate line item.
